They are our faithful friends when we want something easy to wear, a jumper and jeans is the classic go to in my wardrobe and I know I’m not alone. At this time of year we all want warm layers and chunky knits, and comfort is key.

Feeling cosy is easy enough; our faithful jumpers often feel like a security blanket during the winter months, but throwing on a big jumper may not always feel as stylish as you’d like. So here are a few tips on how to style up your nanna cardigan or your cable-knit jumper, whilst striking the balance between effortless and chic.

Accessories Are Key
A statement earring or layers of pendants will easily give a plain black or navy jumper an update. If you’re not a big fan of jewellery then you could opt for a hair accessory, a simple hair band or pretty clip will add a girly finish to a subtle jumper and jeans ensemble. Alternatively try a neck scarf (in your best colours of course) to elevate your look. With a darker shade of knitwear try styling the jumper with light wash distressed denim and white ankle boots for an on-trend look.

Layer Up
Take inspiration from the street-style set and try adding an extra layer to inject interest into your outfit. Choose a bulk-free knit like a thin cashmere roll-neck jumper and then layer under a blazer or a biker jacket, then wear both of these underneath your overcoat. For a chic finish, caping your coat over the top of your shoulders will add a stylish twist. This is a great way to add some colour to your outfit, I have seen some great colour combinations recently including lilac & camel, red & pink and pink and jade green, and not forgetting the pantone colour of the season true blue.

Tuck It In
Demonstrated by bloggers and influencers alike, the “French Tuck” is the perfect way to achieve an effortless look. When it comes to chunky jumpers, the easy way to make them feel a little more sophisticated is to tuck in the front of your top into your lower layer for a polished finish. This is simple but effective trick will give your outfit an update whilst still looking sleek. The front tuck is also great for ladies that want to hide their tummy or bottom as you tuck in around these areas leaving you feeling comfortable.

Belt Up
If you fancy something oversized and slouchy; pair a loose-fitting jumper or cardigan with a pair of skinny jeans to balance out your silhouette. In order to create more shape, you can always cinch in the waist with a belt. To complete the outfit, a pair of of-the-moment hiking boots will add just the right amount of edge for a casual finish. A nanna cardigan has never looked so good, but remember not to oversize too much as it can add pounds!

Button It
The cardigan has become a key player this season, I’m still trying to find one that flatters me, If I’m honest I think its a style for slimmer or more petite builds, so don’t worry if this look is not for you, remember fashion comes and goes but you have to feel comfortable.

So why not emphasise its revival and wear it buttoned up as a top. This makes a real style statement, giving the V-neck cardigan a total revamp but with an effortless result. Pair with high waisted jeans and a statement necklace, or add a white T-shirt underneath to complete the look.
